Shenandoah

Shenandoah Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah') is a colorful ornamental grass prized for its upright habit and striking red-tinted foliage. Growing approximately 3-4 feet tall, with airy flower panicles extending above the foliage, it forms a dense, upright clump of narrow green leaves that begin developing burgundy-red tips during the growing season. As summer progresses, the red coloration intensifies, eventually creating an impressive mixture of green, burgundy, and deep red foliage. In late summer, airy reddish-pink flower panicles emerge above the foliage, adding soft texture and movement to the plant. By fall, the foliage develops even richer burgundy and wine-red tones. The dried foliage and seed heads can be left standing through winter to provide additional texture, structure, and wildlife value. Shenandoah is an excellent choice for mixed borders, mass plantings, rain gardens, naturalized areas, or as a colorful vertical accent. As a cultivar of native switchgrass, it is adaptable, durable, and easy to grow in a wide range of landscape conditions. Shenandoah can tolerate some light shade, but excessive shade may result in greener foliage, weaker stems, and a less compact habit. It is highly adaptable to different soil types and can tolerate both periodically wet and relatively dry conditions once established. Watering:Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Shenandoah is drought tolerant and generally requires supplemental watering only during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Fertilizing:Shenandoah generally requires very little fertilizer. If needed, apply a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage overly vigorous or floppy growth. Pruning:Leave the dried foliage and seed heads standing through winter for added texture, structure, and wildlife value. Cut the entire plant back to approximately 4-6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Shirofugen

The Shirofugen Cherry tree, is an ornamental cherry tree that develops bright pink bunds that burst into double-blossom flowers in the Spring.  These gorgeous, double blossoms emerge white with pink touches. As Spring continues, the pink coloring deepens turning the tree from white to pink.  More About Prunus serrulata ‘Shirofugen’ The Yoshino Cherry is best grown in zones 5 through 8. Select a location in full sunlight to plant your tree. When needed, prune your tree in late-winter. Interesting Notes: The Shirofugen won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in 2002 due to its beauty and elegance. It makes a prominent landscaping feature that can be planted near patios, porches, and pathways. Just be sure that your location is large enough to accommodate as the canopy does sit lower at 4 feet. The Shirofugen tree does not produce fruit. Shirofugen Cherry Tree Growing and Maintenance Tips Till an area that is 4 to 5 feet in diameter for each tree. The Shirofugen Cherry needs to be planted in large, wide beds for strong root growth. Make sure the soil pH is around 6.5 to 7.0. If your soil is more acidic, till in 10 pounds of dolomitic lime to help adjust the pH. Be sure that your soil is well-drained. Dig a hole for each tree that is as deep as its pot. Loosen with a pitchfork as you dig. Firm the soil around the roots. Spread a 2 to 3 inch layer of organic mulch around the tree. Moisten the soil thoroughly to a depth of 12 inches so that the lower roots receive adequate water. Water regularly thereafter for the first year, whenever the soil is dry 2 inches deep. Prune your trees in late winter. Cut back developing branches so that you have approximately 2 feet between levels of branches to maintain the 'scaffold' shape. Prune any branches or stems that develop from the trunk that are below 2 to 3 feet from the soil surface. Height: 25-35FeetSpread: 25-30 Feet

Summer Snowflake Doublefile

Summer Snowflake Doublefile Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum ‘Summer Snowflake’) is an elegant deciduous flowering shrub prized for its abundant white lacecap flowers, graceful horizontal branching, and exceptionally long flowering season. Its naturally layered growth habit creates beautiful architectural interest, making it an outstanding choice for traditional landscapes, estate-style gardens, and mixed flowering shrub borders. Beginning in late spring, Summer Snowflake produces an impressive display of delicate white lacecap flower clusters arranged along its tiered branches. Unlike many traditional viburnums that flower primarily in spring, Summer Snowflake often continues producing additional blooms throughout summer, providing an extended season of beautiful white flowers. Throughout the growing season, Summer Snowflake maintains attractive, deeply veined dark green foliage that complements its distinctive branching structure. Following flowering, ornamental berries may develop, initially appearing red before maturing to black. In autumn, the foliage develops attractive shades of burgundy, reddish-purple, and bronze, adding another layer of seasonal interest. Summer Snowflake is particularly well suited for formal estate-style landscapes, traditional gardens, cottage gardens, and woodland edges. Its elegant horizontal branching makes it an excellent specimen shrub, while its long flowering season provides dependable color in mixed shrub borders and foundation plantings where adequate growing space is available. Summer Snowflake performs best in locations with consistent moisture and good air circulation. Choose a planting location that provides adequate room for its naturally spreading, tiered branches. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Summer Snowflake performs best with consistent moisture, particularly during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Avoid poorly drained locations or areas with prolonged standing water. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed. Incorporating compost or organic matter around the root zone can improve soil fertility and moisture retention. Avoid excessive fertilization, which may encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering. Pruning: Summer Snowflake naturally develops an attractive layered growth habit and generally requires minimal pruning. If shaping is necessary, prune lightly immediately after the main spring flowering period. Avoid heavy shearing, which can destroy its distinctive horizontal branching and reduce additional summer blooms. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed to maintain healthy growth. Winter Care: Summer Snowflake is a cold-hardy deciduous shrub that typically requires little winter protection once established. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from the main stems. Pest Prevention: Monitor periodically for aphids and other common viburnum pests. Maintain good air circulation and healthy growing conditions to reduce stress and discourage pest and disease problems.

Variegatus

Variegated Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus') is a striking ornamental grass prized for its bright, variegated foliage and graceful, arching habit. Growing approximately 5-7 feet tall, with flower plumes extending above the foliage, it forms a large clump of narrow green leaves boldly striped with creamy white. The bright foliage adds excellent contrast and movement to the landscape and can help lighten darker areas of a planting bed. In late summer to early fall, reddish to copper-colored flower plumes emerge above the foliage before gradually maturing to a soft silvery-tan. Its substantial size makes Variegated Maiden Grass an excellent choice for screening, mixed borders, mass plantings, or as a dramatic specimen. The dried foliage and flower plumes can also be left standing through winter to provide additional texture and structure. More About Variegated Maiden Grass Low Maintenance Moderate to Fast Growing Perennial Ornamental Grass Bold Variegated Foliage Screening, Mixed Border, Mass Planting, Accent, Specimen Tall, Upright, Arching Habit Showy Late-Season Flower Plumes Provides Winter Texture and Structure Deer Resistant Drought Tolerant Once Established Height: 5-7 Feet, Taller When in BloomSpread: 4-6 FeetHardiness Zone: 5-9 Characteristics Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun Season of Interest: Summer, Fall, Winter Texture Soil Moisture: Average, Well Draining Attributes: Clumping, Upright, Arching, Variegated Foliage Color: Green with Creamy White Stripes Flower Color: Reddish to Copper, Maturing to Silvery-Tan Care & Maintenance Tips Planting:Plant in full sun to part sun. Variegated Maiden Grass performs best with plenty of sunlight but can tolerate some light shade. Too much shade may result in weaker, floppier growth and reduced flowering. It is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions but performs best in well-drained soil. Watering:Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Variegated Maiden Grass is moderately drought tolerant and generally requires supplemental watering only during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Fertilizing:Variegated Maiden Grass generally requires little fertilizer. If needed, apply a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage overly vigorous or floppy growth. Pruning:Leave the foliage and dried flower plumes standing through winter for added texture and structure. Cut the entire plant back to approximately 4-6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. State Restrictions State Restrictions: Miscanthus sinensis is restricted, prohibited, or being phased out in certain states, including Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, and Delaware. Walker Low

Walker’s Low Catmint (Nepeta × faassenii ‘Walker’s Low’) is a vigorous, long-blooming perennial prized for its abundant lavender-blue flowers, aromatic gray-green foliage, and graceful spreading habit. Growing approximately 24-30 inches tall and 30-36 inches wide, it forms a broad mound that provides excellent color, texture, and coverage throughout the growing season. Lavender-blue flower spikes appear in late spring to early summer and continue blooming for an extended period, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. The aromatic foliage remains attractive throughout the season and is generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Lightly trimming the plant after its initial flush of flowers encourages fresh growth and additional flowering. Walker’s Low is an excellent choice for perennial borders, foundation plantings, mass plantings, walkways, cottage gardens, slopes, rock gardens, or as a flowering groundcover. Its larger size and spreading habit make it especially useful for filling larger areas where smaller catmint varieties may not provide enough coverage. More About Walker’s Low Catmint ● Low Maintenance ● Moderate to Fast Growing ● Herbaceous Perennial ● Long Blooming ● Lavender-Blue Flowers ● Fragrant Foliage ● Drought Tolerant Once Established ● Heat Tolerant ● Perennial Border, Foundation Planting, Mass Planting, Walkway, Cottage Garden, Slope, Rock Garden, Groundcover ● Broad, Mounding Habit ● Attracts Bees & Butterflies ● Pollinator Friendly ● Deer Resistant ● Rabbit Resistant Height: 24-30 Inches Spread: 30-36 Inches Hardiness Zone: 4-8 Characteristics ● Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun ● Season of Interest: Late Spring, Summer, Fall ● Soil Moisture: Dry to Average, Well Draining ● Attributes: Mounding, Spreading, Fragrant, Long Blooming ● Foliage Color: Gray-Green ● Flower Color: Lavender Blue Care & Maintenance Tips Planting: Plant in full sun for the densest growth and heaviest flowering. Willowleaf

Willowleaf Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster salicifolius) is a broad, spreading evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub valued for its graceful arching branches, narrow willow-like foliage, white spring flowers, and abundant red berries. Its dense, cascading growth makes it an excellent choice for slopes, banks, retaining walls, mass plantings, and large areas where dependable year-round coverage is desired. Clusters of small white flowers appear in late spring and attract pollinators before developing into bright red berries that mature in fall. The berries often persist into winter, providing excellent seasonal color and a valuable food source for birds. Its dark green foliage provides additional winter interest and may remain evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on climate and winter conditions. Willowleaf Cotoneaster is especially effective when allowed to develop its natural spreading habit. It works well cascading over walls, covering difficult slopes, controlling erosion, or creating a broad shrub mass in larger landscape beds. More About Willowleaf Cotoneaster Low Maintenance Moderate to Fast Growing Evergreen to Semi-Evergreen White Spring Flowers Bright Red Fall & Winter Berries Excellent Winter Interest Wildlife Friendly Pollinator Friendly Excellent for Slopes & Banks Erosion Control Mass Planting, Groundcover, Retaining Walls, Slopes, Large Borders Broad, Spreading Habit Drought Tolerant Once Established Height: 4-6 FeetSpread: 6-12 FeetHardiness Zone: 6-8 Characteristics Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun Season of Interest: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter Soil Moisture: Average, Well Draining Attributes: Spreading, Arching, Wildlife Friendly, Winter Interest, Erosion Control Foliage Color: Dark Green Flower Color: White Fruit Color: Bright Red Care & Maintenance Tips Planting:Plant in full sun to part sun in well-drained soil. Full sun generally produces the densest growth, strongest flowering, and best berry production. Allow plenty of room for its naturally broad, spreading habit, especially when planting near walkways, structures, or other shrubs. Watering:Water regularly during the first growing season while the root system becomes established. Once established, Willowleaf Cotoneaster has good drought tolerance, although occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods will help maintain healthy growth. Fertilizing:Willowleaf Cotoneaster generally requires little fertilizer. If growth is weak, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring according to label directions. Pruning:Pruning is generally limited to removing dead, damaged, or unwanted branches and controlling spread. Prune after flowering when possible to preserve flowers and the berries that follow. Avoid excessive shearing, as its naturally arching branches are an important part of the plant's character. Disease Prevention:Provide good air circulation and avoid prolonged overhead watering. Cotoneaster can be susceptible to fire blight, so promptly remove affected branches if symptoms appear and disinfect pruning tools between cuts.

Winterthur Smooth Witherod

Winterthur Smooth Witherod Viburnum (Viburnum nudum ‘Winterthur’) is an outstanding deciduous flowering shrub prized for its glossy dark green foliage, abundant creamy-white spring flowers, colorful ornamental berries, and spectacular burgundy-red fall color. This attractive selection of native Smooth Witherod Viburnum offers exceptional three-season interest while providing valuable food and habitat for birds and beneficial wildlife. In late spring to early summer, Winterthur produces an abundance of flat-topped clusters of delicate creamy-white flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. When planted near a compatible, genetically different Smooth Witherod Viburnum, the flowers develop into beautiful clusters of ornamental berries that transition from green to pink and eventually deep blue to purplish-black. Multiple berry colors may appear on the same plant, creating a particularly attractive late-summer and fall display. Throughout the growing season, Winterthur maintains lustrous, dark green foliage and a naturally rounded, upright growth habit. As temperatures cool in autumn, the leaves develop rich shades of burgundy, wine-red, and reddish-purple, creating a dramatic seasonal display. Winterthur is particularly well suited for traditional landscapes, estate-style gardens, native plantings, rain gardens, and woodland borders. Its adaptability to moist soils makes it an excellent choice for low-lying landscape areas, pond borders, and locations where many traditional ornamental shrubs struggle. Its colorful berries and attractive fall foliage also make it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly landscapes. More About Winterthur Smooth Witherod Viburnum Deciduous Flowering Shrub North American Native Species Cultivar Upright, Rounded Growth Habit Creamy-White Spring Flowers Ornamental Pink, Blue, and Purple-Black Berries Glossy Dark Green Foliage Brilliant Burgundy-Red Fall Color Bird Friendly Butterfly and Pollinator Friendly Wildlife Habitat Value Moist Soil Tolerant Wet Soil Tolerant Rain Garden Suitable Adaptable to Clay Soils Low Maintenance Excellent for Mixed Shrub Borders Foundation Planting, Informal Hedge, Woodland Edge, Rain Garden Outstanding Spring, Summer, and Fall Interest Height: 5–8 FeetSpread: 5–8 FeetHardiness Zone: 5–9 Characteristics Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Partial Shade Season of Interest: Spring, Summer, Fall Soil Moisture: Average to Wet; Prefers Moist, Acidic Soil Attributes: Native Species Cultivar, Flowering, Berry Producing with Cross-Pollination, Bird Friendly, Pollinator Friendly, Wet Soil Tolerant Foliage Color: Glossy Dark Green; Burgundy-Red to Purple in Fall Flower Color: Creamy White Berry Color: Pink, Blue, Purplish-Black Care & Maintenance Tips Planting: Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, organically rich soil. Winterthur prefers slightly acidic conditions and adapts well to locations with consistently moist or occasionally wet soil. It is particularly suitable for rain gardens, pond borders, woodland edges, and low-lying landscape areas. For the best berry production, plant near a different, compatible Smooth Witherod Viburnum cultivar with overlapping flowering times. Brandywine™ Viburnum is an excellent companion for cross-pollination. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Winterthur performs best with consistent soil moisture and tolerates wetter conditions than many common landscape shrubs. Provide supplemental watering during extended periods of drought, particularly in sunnier locations. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed. Incorporating compost or organic matter can help improve soil quality and moisture retention. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering. Pruning: Winterthur naturally develops an attractive rounded habit and generally requires minimal pruning. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. If shaping is necessary, prune immediately after flowering. Avoid excessive pruning, as removing spent flowers or developing fruit will reduce the ornamental berry display. Winter Care: Winterthur is a cold-hardy deciduous shrub that requires little winter protection once established. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from the main stems. Pollination Requirements: For reliable berry production, plant Winterthur near a genetically different Smooth Witherod Viburnum with overlapping bloom times, such as Brandywine™. Multiple Winterthur plants alone will not provide the cross-pollination needed for the best fruit display.
