Willowleaf

Willowleaf Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster salicifolius) is a broad, spreading evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub valued for its graceful arching branches, narrow willow-like foliage, white spring flowers, and abundant red berries. Its dense, cascading growth makes it an excellent choice for slopes, banks, retaining walls, mass plantings, and large areas where dependable year-round coverage is desired. Clusters of small white flowers appear in late spring and attract pollinators before developing into bright red berries that mature in fall. The berries often persist into winter, providing excellent seasonal color and a valuable food source for birds. Its dark green foliage provides additional winter interest and may remain evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on climate and winter conditions. Willowleaf Cotoneaster is especially effective when allowed to develop its natural spreading habit. It works well cascading over walls, covering difficult slopes, controlling erosion, or creating a broad shrub mass in larger landscape beds. Full sun generally produces the densest growth, strongest flowering, and best berry production. Allow plenty of room for its naturally broad, spreading habit, especially when planting near walkways, structures, or other shrubs. Watering:Water regularly during the first growing season while the root system becomes established. Once established, Willowleaf Cotoneaster has good drought tolerance, although occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods will help maintain healthy growth. Fertilizing:Willowleaf Cotoneaster generally requires little fertilizer. If growth is weak, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring according to label directions. Pruning:Pruning is generally limited to removing dead, damaged, or unwanted branches and controlling spread. Prune after flowering when possible to preserve flowers and the berries that follow. Avoid excessive shearing, as its naturally arching branches are an important part of the plant's character. Disease Prevention:Provide good air circulation and avoid prolonged overhead watering. Cotoneaster can be susceptible to fire blight, so promptly remove affected branches if symptoms appear and disinfect pruning tools between cuts.
