Standing Ovation

Standing Ovation Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium 'Standing Ovation') is a colorful native ornamental grass prized for its strong upright habit, blue-green foliage, and exceptional fall color. Growing approximately 3-4 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide, it forms a narrow, vertical clump with sturdy stems that resist flopping even in challenging landscape conditions. During the growing season, the foliage displays attractive blue-green tones with hints of purple. As temperatures cool in fall, the plant transforms into a brilliant mixture of red, orange, purple, and burgundy. Airy seed heads develop later in the season, adding additional texture and providing food and cover for wildlife. The dried stems can be left standing through winter for continued structure and interest. Standing Ovation is an excellent choice for mixed borders, mass plantings, native gardens, meadow plantings, slopes, erosion control, or as a vertical accent. Once established, it is exceptionally tolerant of heat, drought, poor soil, and dry conditions. More About Standing Ovation Little Bluestem Low Maintenance Moderate Growing Perennial Ornamental Grass Native Cultivar Drought Tolerant Once Established Heat Tolerant Poor Soil Tolerant Mixed Border, Mass Planting, Native Garden, Meadow, Slopes, Erosion Control, Accent Strong, Upright Habit Excellent Fall Color Provides Winter Texture and Structure Deer Resistant Provides Wildlife Value Height: 3-4 FeetSpread: 1-2 FeetHardiness Zone: 3-9 Characteristics Sun Exposure: Full Sun Season of Interest: Summer, Fall, Winter Texture Soil Moisture: Dry to Average, Well Draining Attributes: Clumping, Upright, Narrow, Native Foliage Color: Blue-Green with Purple Tones; Red, Orange, Purple and Burgundy in Fall Flower/Seed Head Color: Silvery-Tan Care & Maintenance Tips Planting:Plant in full sun for the strongest upright growth and best foliage coloration. Standing Ovation performs exceptionally well in dry, lean, and well-drained soils. Avoid overly rich soil or consistently wet locations, which can encourage weaker growth and reduce its naturally upright habit. Watering:Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Standing Ovation is highly drought tolerant and generally requires little supplemental watering except during prolonged periods of extreme drought. Fertilizing:Very little fertilizer is required. Little Bluestem performs best in relatively lean soils, and excessive fertilizer can encourage excessive growth and weaker stems. Pruning:Leave the dried foliage and seed heads standing through winter for added texture, structure, and wildlife value. Cut the entire plant back to approximately 3-6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Summer Snowflake Doublefile

Summer Snowflake Doublefile Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum ‘Summer Snowflake’) is an elegant deciduous flowering shrub prized for its abundant white lacecap flowers, graceful horizontal branching, and exceptionally long flowering season. Its naturally layered growth habit creates beautiful architectural interest, making it an outstanding choice for traditional landscapes, estate-style gardens, and mixed flowering shrub borders. Beginning in late spring, Summer Snowflake produces an impressive display of delicate white lacecap flower clusters arranged along its tiered branches. Unlike many traditional viburnums that flower primarily in spring, Summer Snowflake often continues producing additional blooms throughout summer, providing an extended season of beautiful white flowers. Throughout the growing season, Summer Snowflake maintains attractive, deeply veined dark green foliage that complements its distinctive branching structure. Following flowering, ornamental berries may develop, initially appearing red before maturing to black. In autumn, the foliage develops attractive shades of burgundy, reddish-purple, and bronze, adding another layer of seasonal interest. Summer Snowflake is particularly well suited for formal estate-style landscapes, traditional gardens, cottage gardens, and woodland edges. Its elegant horizontal branching makes it an excellent specimen shrub, while its long flowering season provides dependable color in mixed shrub borders and foundation plantings where adequate growing space is available. More About Summer Snowflake Doublefile Viburnum Deciduous Flowering Shrub Elegant Horizontal, Tiered Branching Upright, Spreading Growth Habit Abundant White Lacecap Flowers Extended Spring and Summer Blooming Additional Flowers Throughout Summer Attractive Deeply Veined Green Foliage Burgundy-Red and Purple Fall Color Ornamental Red-to-Black Berries, When Produced Pollinator Friendly Bird Friendly Excellent Specimen Shrub Architectural Landscape Interest Moderate Growth Rate Low Maintenance Once Established Mixed Shrub Border, Foundation Planting, Woodland Edge, Specimen Planting Excellent Spring, Summer, and Fall Interest Height: 5–8 FeetSpread: 6–10 FeetHardiness Zone: 5–8 Characteristics Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Partial Shade Season of Interest: Spring, Summer, Fall Soil Moisture: Average to Moist, Well Draining Attributes: Flowering, Extended Blooming, Horizontal Branching, Architectural Form, Fall Color, Pollinator Friendly Foliage Color: Dark Green; Burgundy-Red to Purple in Fall Flower Color: White Flower Fragrance: Little to None Berry Color: Red Maturing to Black, When Produced Care & Maintenance Tips Planting: Plant in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Summer Snowflake performs best in locations with consistent moisture and good air circulation. Choose a planting location that provides adequate room for its naturally spreading, tiered branches. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Summer Snowflake performs best with consistent moisture, particularly during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Avoid poorly drained locations or areas with prolonged standing water. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed. Incorporating compost or organic matter around the root zone can improve soil fertility and moisture retention. Avoid excessive fertilization, which may encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering. Pruning: Summer Snowflake naturally develops an attractive layered growth habit and generally requires minimal pruning. If shaping is necessary, prune lightly immediately after the main spring flowering period. Avoid heavy shearing, which can destroy its distinctive horizontal branching and reduce additional summer blooms. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed to maintain healthy growth. Winter Care: Summer Snowflake is a cold-hardy deciduous shrub that typically requires little winter protection once established. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from the main stems. Pest Prevention: Monitor periodically for aphids and other common viburnum pests. Maintain good air circulation and healthy growing conditions to reduce stress and discourage pest and disease problems.

Taylor

Taylor Juniper (Juniperus virginiana 'Taylor') is a narrow, columnar evergreen prized for its dense blue-green foliage, strong vertical form, and exceptional adaptability. Growing approximately 15-20 feet tall while remaining only 3-4 feet wide, it provides substantial height without taking up the space required by broader evergreen trees. Its dense, fine-textured foliage maintains attractive blue-green to gray-green color throughout the year and provides dependable evergreen structure in all seasons. Taylor's naturally narrow form makes it an excellent choice for tight spaces where traditional privacy evergreens would eventually become too wide. Taylor Juniper is especially well suited for narrow privacy screens, property lines, driveway entrances, foundation accents, formal landscapes, or planted in rows to create a strong architectural effect. As a cultivar of the native Eastern Red Cedar, it is highly adaptable and performs particularly well in sunny, dry, and challenging landscape conditions. Watering:Water regularly during the first growing season while the root system becomes established. Once established, Willowleaf Cotoneaster has good drought tolerance, although occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods will help maintain healthy growth. Fertilizing:Willowleaf Cotoneaster generally requires little fertilizer. If growth is weak, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring according to label directions. Pruning:Pruning is generally limited to removing dead, damaged, or unwanted branches and controlling spread. Prune after flowering when possible to preserve flowers and the berries that follow. Avoid excessive shearing, as its naturally arching branches are an important part of the plant's character. Disease Prevention:Provide good air circulation and avoid prolonged overhead watering. This attractive selection of native Smooth Witherod Viburnum offers exceptional three-season interest while providing valuable food and habitat for birds and beneficial wildlife. In late spring to early summer, Winterthur produces an abundance of flat-topped clusters of delicate creamy-white flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. When planted near a compatible, genetically different Smooth Witherod Viburnum, the flowers develop into beautiful clusters of ornamental berries that transition from green to pink and eventually deep blue to purplish-black. Multiple berry colors may appear on the same plant, creating a particularly attractive late-summer and fall display. Throughout the growing season, Winterthur maintains lustrous, dark green foliage and a naturally rounded, upright growth habit. As temperatures cool in autumn, the leaves develop rich shades of burgundy, wine-red, and reddish-purple, creating a dramatic seasonal display. Winterthur is particularly well suited for traditional landscapes, estate-style gardens, native plantings, rain gardens, and woodland borders. Its adaptability to moist soils makes it an excellent choice for low-lying landscape areas, pond borders, and locations where many traditional ornamental shrubs struggle. Its colorful berries and attractive fall foliage also make it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly landscapes. Winterthur prefers slightly acidic conditions and adapts well to locations with consistently moist or occasionally wet soil. It is particularly suitable for rain gardens, pond borders, woodland edges, and low-lying landscape areas. For the best berry production, plant near a different, compatible Smooth Witherod Viburnum cultivar with overlapping flowering times. Brandywine™ Viburnum is an excellent companion for cross-pollination. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Winterthur performs best with consistent soil moisture and tolerates wetter conditions than many common landscape shrubs. Provide supplemental watering during extended periods of drought, particularly in sunnier locations. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed. Incorporating compost or organic matter can help improve soil quality and moisture retention. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering. Pruning: Winterthur naturally develops an attractive rounded habit and generally requires minimal pruning. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. If shaping is necessary, prune immediately after flowering. Avoid excessive pruning, as removing spent flowers or developing fruit will reduce the ornamental berry display. Winter Care: Winterthur is a cold-hardy deciduous shrub that requires little winter protection once established. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from the main stems. Pollination Requirements: For reliable berry production, plant Winterthur near a genetically different Smooth Witherod Viburnum with overlapping bloom times, such as Brandywine™. Multiple Winterthur plants alone will not provide the cross-pollination needed for the best fruit display.

Yellow Delicious

Pink buds open to white flowers in the spring and by September and October the golden yellow skin fruit begins to ripen.  Sweet, full of flavor eaten fresh and in desserts. Excellent pollinator for other apples trees blooming at the same time.  Interesting Notes: GROWN SAFE™  For your safety and peace of mind, we give you our word that for at least the past twelve months the only pest controls used on our fruit and berries are those listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMR) for organic fruit and berry production. Fruit trees are no longer just for the orchard, consider incorporating them in your landscape.  Not only do you have a flowering tree in the spring but the benefit of home grown fruit in late summer and fall. Yellow Delicious Apple Growing and Maintenance Tips Fertilize in spring with an all-purpose fertilizer before new growth begins. Will cross pollinate with the varieties we offer. To prune an apple tree, start by removing dead, diseased, and broken branches. Then, thin out the canopy by removing downward-growing branches, crossing or rubbing branches, and vigorous upright shoots called "water sprouts". Always make cuts to the branch collar and avoid removing more than one-third of the tree’s canopy in a single pruning session to prevent shocking the tree.  Height: 12-15 FeetSpread: 12-15 FeetHardiness Zone: 5-8 Malus domestica 'Yellow Delicious' Characteristics Exposure: Full Sun Soil Moisture: Average Water Attributes: Edible Production: Considered partial self pollinating, but benefits from having a second peach tree to cross pollinate Season of Interest (Flowering): Spring

Yoshino

The Yoshino Cherry tree, is an ornamental hybrid cherry tree from Tokyo that is very recognizable in the Washington D.C. area Tidal Basin. The tree develops gorgeous white flowers with tinges of pink in the spring, followed by small black cherries that are unfortunately inedible for humans because they are so bitter. Birds on the other hand love them.  More About Prunus yedoensis 'Yoshino Cherry' The Yoshino Cherry is best grown in zones 5 through 8. Select a location in full sunlight to plant your tree. When needed, prune your tree in late-winter. Interesting Notes: Select a location in full sunlight to plant your Yoshino Cherry tree. It makes a striking landscaping feature to line lawns, decks and patios. Just be sure that your location is large enough to accommodate these fast-growing trees that can reach 40 - 50 feet in height with a 25 - 40 foot spread. Fruits are globose, 1/2" diameter, shining black drupes and a delicacy for the birds in your area (inedible for humans). Yoshino Cherry Tree Growing and Maintenance Tips Till an area that is 4 to 5 feet in diameter for each tree. The Yoshino Cherry needs to be planted in large, wide beds for strong root growth. Make sure the soil pH is around 6.5 to 7.0. If your soil is more acidic, till in 10 pounds of dolomitic lime to help adjust the pH. Be sure that your soil is well-drained. Dig a hole for each tree that is as deep as its pot. Loosen with a pitchfork as you dig. Firm the soil around the roots. Spread a 2 to 3 inch layer of organic mulch around the tree. Moisten the soil thoroughly to a depth of 12 inches so that the lower roots receive adequate water. Water regularly thereafter for the first year, whenever the soil is dry 2 inches deep. Prune your trees in late winter. Cut back developing branches so that you have approximately 2 feet between levels of branches to maintain the 'scaffold' shape. Prune any branches or stems that develop from the trunk that are below 2 to 3 feet from the soil surface. Height: 40-50 FeetSpread: 25-40 FeetSpacing: 45-50 Feet

Yoshino

Yoshino Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica 'Yoshino') is a fast-growing evergreen tree prized for its soft, feathery foliage, dense pyramidal habit, and excellent year-round screening. Growing approximately 30-40 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide at maturity, it develops a full, upright form with rich green foliage that creates an attractive alternative to traditional arborvitae and other privacy evergreens. The soft, fine-textured foliage remains attractive throughout the year and may develop subtle bronze tones during colder winter weather before returning to green in spring. Yoshino grows relatively quickly when young, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens, property lines, windbreaks, or as a large evergreen specimen. Unlike many needled evergreens, Cryptomeria has soft foliage that provides a lush appearance without the coarse or sharply pointed texture of some conifers. Its naturally dense, pyramidal form generally requires very little pruning. More About Yoshino Cryptomeria Low Maintenance Fast Growing Evergreen Year-Round Privacy Privacy Screen, Property Line, Windbreak, Evergreen Border, Specimen Dense, Pyramidal Habit Soft, Feathery Foliage Excellent Screening Plant Deer Resistant Height: 30-40 FeetSpread: 15-20 FeetHardiness Zone: 5-9 Characteristics Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun Season of Interest: Year Round Soil Moisture: Average to Moist, Well Draining Attributes: Evergreen, Upright, Pyramidal, Fast Growing Foliage Color: Rich Green, Occasionally Bronzing in Winter Care & Maintenance Tips Planting:Plant in full sun to part sun. Yoshino develops its densest growth and strongest form with plenty of sunlight but can tolerate some light shade. It prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil and appreciates consistent moisture, particularly while becoming established. Watering:Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a deep, healthy root system. Once established, Yoshino prefers average moisture and should be watered during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Avoid both prolonged drought and consistently waterlogged soil. Fertilizing:Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees and evergreens in early spring if needed. Adding organic matter around the root zone can also help improve soil conditions and maintain healthy growth. Pruning:Very little pruning is generally required. Yoshino naturally develops an attractive pyramidal form. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. Light shaping can be performed in late winter or early spring if a more formal appearance is desired.

Zebra

Zebra Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus') is a bold ornamental grass known for its distinctive horizontally banded foliage and tall, graceful habit. Growing approximately 5-7 feet tall, with flower plumes extending even higher, it produces arching green leaves marked with irregular golden-yellow horizontal bands. The striped foliage provides excellent color and texture throughout the growing season, even before the plant begins to flower. In late summer to early fall, feathery reddish to copper-colored flower plumes emerge above the foliage and gradually mature to a soft silvery-tan. Its larger size makes Zebra Grass an excellent choice for screening, mixed borders, mass plantings, or as a dramatic specimen. The dried foliage and flower plumes can also be left standing through winter to provide additional texture and structure in the landscape. More About Zebra Grass Low Maintenance Moderate to Fast Growing Perennial Ornamental Grass Distinctive Horizontal Yellow Bands Screening, Mixed Border, Mass Planting, Accent, Specimen Tall, Upright, Arching Habit Showy Late-Season Flower Plumes Provides Winter Texture and Structure Deer Resistant Height: 5-7 Feet, Taller When in BloomSpread: 4-6 FeetHardiness Zone: 5-9 Characteristics Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun (best color and flowering in full sun) Season of Interest: Summer, Fall, Winter Texture Soil Moisture: Average, Well Draining Attributes: Clumping, Upright, Arching, Variegated Foliage Color: Green with Horizontal Golden-Yellow Bands Flower Color: Reddish to Copper, Maturing to Silvery-Tan Care & Maintenance Tips Planting:Plant in full sun for the strongest growth, best foliage coloration, and most reliable flowering. Zebra Grass can tolerate some light shade, but too much shade may result in weaker growth, reduced banding, and fewer flower plumes. It is adaptable to a variety of soils but performs best in well-drained conditions. Watering:Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Zebra Grass can tolerate occasional dry periods, although supplemental watering during extended hot or dry weather will help maintain healthy growth. Fertilizing:Zebra Grass generally requires little fertilizer. If needed, apply a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage overly vigorous or floppy growth. Pruning:Leave the foliage and dried flower plumes standing through winter for added texture and structure. Cut the entire plant back to approximately 4-6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. State Restrictions: Miscanthus sinensis is restricted, prohibited, or being phased out in certain states, including Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, and Delaware. Please check your local regulations before purchasing.
