European Snowball
European Snowball Viburnum (Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’) is a magnificent deciduous flowering shrub prized for its large, rounded clusters of brilliant white flowers, lush green foliage, and impressive landscape presence. This traditional garden favorite produces an abundance of showy, snowball-shaped blooms that create a spectacular spring display in foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, and estate-style landscapes.
In mid to late spring, European Snowball Viburnum develops large, rounded flower clusters that emerge soft green before gradually transitioning to creamy white. The abundant blooms create a dramatic display against the shrub's attractive, maple-like green foliage. As the flowers mature, they may develop subtle pinkish tones before fading.
Throughout the growing season, European Snowball Viburnum maintains a dense, upright, rounded growth habit that provides excellent structure and seasonal screening. In autumn, its foliage may develop attractive shades of red, orange, and burgundy, adding another layer of seasonal interest.
European Snowball Viburnum is particularly well suited for traditional landscapes, cottage gardens, formal estate-style properties, and large mixed shrub borders. Its dramatic spring flowers make it an outstanding specimen shrub, while its naturally substantial size makes it useful for informal hedges and seasonal privacy screening. The large flower clusters are also beautiful when used in fresh floral arrangements.

Care & Maintenance Tips
Planting:
Plant in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. European Snowball Viburnum performs best with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for abundant flowering, although it tolerates some afternoon shade. Allow adequate room for its mature height and spread, as this variety develops into a substantial shrub.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Avoid allowing the soil to remain excessively dry, as prolonged drought stress can affect foliage quality and flowering.
Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed. Incorporating compost or organic matter around the root zone can improve soil fertility and moisture retention. Avoid excessive fertilization, which may encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
Pruning:
European Snowball Viburnum blooms on old wood, so prune immediately after flowering if shaping or size control is necessary. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. Avoid heavy pruning in fall or early spring, as this can remove the following season's flower buds.
Winter Care:
This cold-hardy deciduous shrub typically requires little winter protection once established. Apply a layer of mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from the main stems.
Pest Prevention:
Monitor regularly for aphids and viburnum leaf beetle. European Snowball Viburnum can be highly susceptible to viburnum leaf beetle damage, which may cause extensive defoliation if left untreated. Inspect twigs for overwintering egg sites and foliage for feeding damage during spring and summer.
