May Night
May Night Meadow Sage (Salvia × sylvestris ‘Mainacht’) is a beautiful herbaceous perennial prized for its deep violet-purple flower spikes, aromatic green foliage, and dependable late-spring flowering display. Its colorful upright blooms rise above a dense mound of foliage, creating striking vertical texture in perennial borders, mixed landscape beds, and pollinator gardens.
Beginning in late spring, May Night produces an abundance of rich purple-blue flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Its flowers provide excellent early-season color, and removing spent flower spikes can encourage additional blooms throughout summer.
May Night is particularly well suited for cottage gardens, formal estate-style landscapes, traditional borders, and low-maintenance pollinator gardens. Its compact, clump-forming habit makes it an excellent choice for mass plantings, edging, and repeated accents along walkways or garden beds. Its deep purple flowers contrast beautifully with white, pink, and yellow flowering plants.

Care & Maintenance Tips
Planting:
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. May Night performs best with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Avoid poorly drained or consistently wet locations, especially during winter, as excess moisture can damage the root system.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, May Night has good drought tolerance and generally requires supplemental watering only during extended periods of hot, dry weather.
Fertilizing:
May Night generally requires little fertilizer. Apply a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
Pruning:
Remove spent flower spikes after the initial bloom to encourage additional flowering. Cutting the plant back by approximately one-third after the first major flush can promote fresh growth and repeat blooms. Remove dead stems and foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Winter Care:
Ensure excellent drainage throughout winter. In colder climates, leave some old growth standing until early spring to help protect the crown from harsh winter conditions.
