Carolina Sweetheart® Redbud is a spectacular deciduous ornamental tree prized for its colorful variegated foliage, beautiful spring flowers, and graceful spreading habit. Unlike traditional redbuds, Carolina Sweetheart® provides outstanding foliage color throughout the growing season, making it a stunning focal point in residential landscapes.
In early spring, clusters of rosy-pink flowers cover the bare branches before the leaves emerge, creating a beautiful display of seasonal color. As spring progresses, heart-shaped leaves emerge in rich purple tones before developing a striking combination of pink, white, green, and burgundy. The foliage gradually becomes greener during summer while retaining attractive variegation.
Its naturally rounded canopy makes Carolina Sweetheart® an excellent choice for front yards, specimen plantings, mixed borders, woodland gardens, and ornamental landscape beds. The colorful foliage contrasts beautifully with dark green evergreens and flowering shrubs, making it particularly attractive in traditional, cottage, and estate-style landscapes.

Care & Maintenance Tips
Planting:
Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Carolina Sweetheart® performs best with consistent moisture and benefits from protection against intense afternoon sun in particularly hot locations. Allow adequate space for its mature spreading canopy.
Watering:
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, provide supplemental watering during extended dry periods, particularly during summer heat.
Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if soil conditions indicate a need. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage unnecessary growth.
Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain a balanced canopy. Avoid excessive pruning, as redbuds develop their most attractive appearance when allowed to maintain their natural form.
Winter Care:
Apply a layer of mulch around the root zone while keeping mulch away from the trunk. Avoid mechanical damage to the bark and protect young trees from deer browsing.
