Compacta Inkberry
Compacta Inkberry Holly (Ilex glabra ‘Compacta’) is a beautiful native broadleaf evergreen shrub prized for its glossy dark green foliage, naturally rounded growth habit, and excellent adaptability to a variety of landscape conditions. Its attractive, finely textured leaves provide year-round color and structure, making it a wonderful choice for foundation plantings, evergreen hedges, mixed shrub borders, and traditional estate-style gardens.
Throughout spring and summer, Compacta Inkberry develops dense, attractive green foliage that resembles traditional Japanese Holly and boxwood. In late spring, small greenish-white flowers appear among the leaves. Although relatively inconspicuous, these nectar-rich flowers provide an important food source for bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Compacta is a female selection of Inkberry Holly. When a compatible male Inkberry Holly is planted nearby, the flowers may develop into small, glossy black berries that mature in fall and can persist into winter. These berries provide a seasonal food source for birds and other wildlife while adding subtle ornamental interest.
Unlike many traditional evergreen foundation shrubs, Compacta Inkberry Holly performs particularly well in acidic soils and tolerates consistently moist conditions, including occasional wet periods. Its adaptability makes it an excellent choice for rain gardens, woodland edges, naturalized plantings, and areas with heavier soils.
Compacta Inkberry Holly is especially well suited for traditional landscapes, formal estate-style gardens, native plantings, and mixed evergreen borders. Its naturally rounded form provides a softer appearance than tightly sheared evergreens, while its ability to tolerate selective pruning makes it useful for informal hedges and organized foundation plantings.

Care & Maintenance Tips
Planting:
Plant in full sun to partial shade in acidic, organically rich soil. Compacta Inkberry Holly performs particularly well in consistently moist locations but also adapts to average garden conditions.
Avoid alkaline soils, which can cause yellowing foliage and reduced plant vigor.
For informal hedges, space plants approximately 3–4 feet apart, depending on the desired density and available growing space. Allow adequate room for the shrub's naturally spreading growth habit.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Compacta Inkberry Holly prefers consistent soil moisture, particularly during hot summer weather.
Once established, it tolerates occasional dry periods, but prolonged drought can cause stress and leaf loss. Supplemental watering may be necessary during extended periods without rainfall.
Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring if needed. Incorporating compost or organic matter around the root zone can improve soil structure and moisture retention.
Avoid excessive fertilization and unnecessary lime applications, as Inkberry Holly performs best in acidic soil.
Pruning:
Compacta Inkberry Holly naturally develops an attractive rounded shape and generally requires minimal pruning.
If shaping is necessary, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Selective thinning can encourage fresh growth and help maintain foliage density near the base of the shrub.
Avoid excessive repeated shearing, which may contribute to sparse interior growth and reduce the plant's natural appearance.
Winter Care:
Compacta Inkberry Holly retains its foliage throughout winter, providing valuable evergreen structure. In colder or exposed locations, leaves may develop olive-green tones or experience winter burn.
Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from the main stems.
Pest Prevention:
Monitor periodically for spider mites, leaf miners, and occasional leaf spot. Maintain acidic soil conditions, adequate moisture, and good air circulation to promote healthy growth.
Pollination Requirements:
Compacta is a female cultivar and requires pollen from a compatible male Inkberry Holly for reliable berry production. Without a suitable male pollinator nearby, plants may flower but generally will not produce black berries.
