Castle Spire®
Castle Spire® Blue Holly (Ilex × meserveae ‘Hachfee’) is a beautiful broadleaf evergreen shrub prized for its glossy dark green foliage, exceptionally dense branching, and naturally narrow pyramidal growth habit. This elegant Meserve Hybrid Holly provides dependable year-round structure while occupying considerably less space than many traditional evergreen hollies, making it an outstanding choice for foundation plantings, narrow privacy screens, formal gardens, and traditional estate-style landscapes.
In spring, Castle Spire® produces fresh evergreen growth along its tightly branched, upright framework. Its attractive, glossy leaves feature finely spined margins and a rich green color that creates a polished, refined appearance. Small greenish-white flowers emerge in spring, attracting bees and other visiting pollinators. When pollinated by a compatible male holly, these flowers develop into ornamental berries.
Throughout summer, Castle Spire® maintains its dense, upright form and lustrous dark green foliage. Its naturally narrow silhouette makes it particularly desirable for landscapes where vertical interest is needed without the substantial width of larger evergreen shrubs. It works beautifully beside entrances, along walkways, at building corners, or grouped to create a structured evergreen screen.
As autumn approaches, pollinated plants develop brilliant red berries that contrast beautifully against the dark evergreen foliage. These colorful fruits often persist into winter, creating exceptional seasonal interest and providing a potential food source for birds. The combination of glossy leaves and festive red berries makes Castle Spire® especially attractive during the holiday season.
Unlike many traditional hollies that require frequent pruning to maintain a tidy appearance, Castle Spire® naturally develops a dense, symmetrical pyramidal shape. Its compact branching and relatively narrow mature width make it an excellent architectural evergreen for residential and commercial properties.
Whether planted individually as a specimen, paired beside an entrance, or arranged in a row for a narrow evergreen hedge, Castle Spire® offers an elegant combination of year-round foliage, winter color, and refined landscape structure.

Care & Maintenance Tips
Planting:
Plant in full sun to partial shade in fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Castle Spire® performs best where its roots receive consistent moisture without prolonged waterlogging.
Choose a location protected from harsh, drying winter winds, particularly in colder climates.
For narrow evergreen screens, space plants approximately 4–5 feet apart, depending on the desired density. Allow sufficient room for mature growth and air circulation.
Plant a compatible male holly, preferably Castle Wall® Blue Holly, nearby to encourage dependable berry production.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Maintain evenly moist soil without allowing water to collect around the roots.
Once established, Castle Spire® tolerates occasional dry periods but benefits from supplemental watering during extended summer droughts.
Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving evergreen shrubs in early spring if needed.
Maintain a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures. Keep mulch away from the main stems.
Avoid unnecessary lime applications, which may raise soil pH and contribute to yellowing foliage.
Pruning:
Castle Spire® naturally develops a dense, symmetrical pyramidal shape and generally requires very little pruning.
If shaping is necessary, selectively prune in late winter or early spring. Avoid excessive shearing, which can remove flower buds and reduce subsequent berry production.
Preserving the plant's natural shape will typically provide the most attractive appearance.
Winter Care:
Castle Spire® is a cold-hardy evergreen that maintains its foliage throughout winter.
In colder or exposed locations, protect plants from strong winter winds, excessive road salt, and drying conditions. Water thoroughly during dry autumn periods before the ground freezes.
A layer of organic mulch helps conserve soil moisture and protect the root zone.
Pest Prevention:
Monitor periodically for holly leaf miners, scale insects, spider mites, and occasional leaf spot.
Maintain proper soil drainage, adequate air circulation, and appropriate soil acidity. Avoid prolonged soil saturation, which can contribute to root diseases.
Pollination Requirements:
Castle Spire® is a female holly cultivar and requires a compatible male holly for reliable berry production.
Castle Wall® Blue Holly (Ilex × meserveae ‘Heckenstar’) is the recommended pollinator because its flowering period overlaps with Castle Spire®.
Plant a compatible male nearby, ideally within approximately 50 feet. One healthy male plant can typically pollinate several female hollies.
Other male Meserve Hollies may provide pollen when flowering periods overlap, but Castle Wall® is the recommended pairing.
Wildlife and Safety:
The bright red berries may provide winter food for birds. Holly berries are not edible for people and may cause gastrointestinal illness if consumed. Keep berries away from young children and pets.
