Bloomerang® Dark Purple
Bloomerang® Dark Purple Lilac (Syringa ‘SMSJBP7’) is a beautiful deciduous flowering shrub prized for its abundant deep purple blossoms, delightful fragrance, and exceptional reblooming performance. Its large, rounded flower clusters create a spectacular spring display, while its ability to produce additional flowers from midsummer through fall provides extended seasonal beauty rarely found in traditional lilacs.
Beginning in mid to late spring, Bloomerang® Dark Purple produces large, richly colored purple flower buds that open into fragrant, deep purple-lilac blossoms. These showy flowers fill the surrounding landscape with the classic sweet fragrance associated with lilacs while attracting butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators.
Following its initial spring flowering period, Bloomerang® Dark Purple takes a brief rest before developing fresh new growth and producing another display of fragrant flowers from midsummer into fall. Its improved resistance to common lilac diseases helps maintain attractive green foliage throughout the growing season.
Bloomerang® Dark Purple naturally develops a dense, rounded growth habit, making it an excellent choice for traditional landscapes, cottage gardens, formal estate-style borders, and mixed flowering hedges. Its fragrant blossoms are particularly enjoyable near patios, walkways, outdoor seating areas, and garden entrances. The flowers are also excellent for cutting and displaying indoors.

Care & Maintenance Tips
Planting:
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Bloomerang® Dark Purple performs best with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, which encourages vigorous growth, dense branching, and abundant flowering.
Lilacs generally prefer neutral to slightly alkaline soil and do not tolerate prolonged wet or soggy conditions.
For flowering hedges or group plantings, space plants approximately 4–6 feet apart, depending on the desired density and available growing space.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Bloomerang® Dark Purple has moderate drought tolerance but benefits from consistent moisture during extended periods of hot, dry weather.
Adequate watering after the spring flowering period is especially important because new summer growth supports the second flush of flowers.
Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs in early spring if needed. A light additional application after the initial spring bloom may help encourage healthy new growth and repeat flowering.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
Pruning:
Bloomerang® Dark Purple naturally develops an attractive rounded shape and requires minimal pruning.
If shaping is necessary, prune immediately after the initial spring flowering period. Lightly removing spent flowers can improve the plant's appearance and encourage additional blooming.
Avoid heavy pruning in late summer, fall, or winter, as this can reduce the following spring's flower display.
Winter Care:
Bloomerang® Dark Purple is an exceptionally cold-hardy deciduous shrub that naturally loses its foliage during winter. Apply a light layer of mulch around the root zone to help moderate soil temperatures and conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from the main stems.
Pest Prevention:
Bloomerang® Dark Purple offers improved resistance to common lilac diseases, including powdery mildew. Provide adequate sunlight, good air circulation, and well-drained soil to encourage healthy growth.
Monitor periodically for aphids, scale insects, lilac borers, and other common garden pests.
